Process

  1. You will be notified via Email
  2. You will be given instructions on what to bring, and items to prepare:
    1. Print email out
    2. Print application form out, a link will be given to you
      • TIP: Save the application form (as a PDF) immediately, the link has been known to disappear after awhile (you'll need this form again in subsequent rounds)
    1. IC/Passport
      • For identification during document check
      • If you have a driving licence, use it to the pass exchange at guardhouse so you can hold on to your IC
    2. Birth certificate (Original and a photocopy)
    3. All educational certificates (Original and a photocopy)
    4. 1 recent passport-sized photograph
    5. Original report by a qualified doctor (an optician report will not be accepted) for visual acuity eye-test with and without optical aids (Snellen's Chart) and colour vision test (Ishihara). The cost of the eye-test and colour vision test will be on your own account.
      • Lots of confusions and questions on this
      • Any GP can do these tests, just call them up beforehand and mention "Snellen's Chart" and "Ishihara"
      • No need to go to a eye specialist, save yourself the money
      • It will cost $20-35
      • Doesn't matter if you get a hand-written or typed out report
      • Most important just has to state your visual acuity (with and without optical aids, Left eye, Right eye) (i.e. 6/6,), your colour vision (i.e. normal), you can ask the doctor to indicate on the report that the snellen chart and ishihara were the methods used, to be extra sure.
    1. NS Certificate of Service (Original and a photocopy) (where applicable)
    2. Re-entry permit card (Original and a photocopy) (for SIN Permanent Residents)
    3. Relevant Testimonials, Flying license and log book (where applicable)
  3. Dress smartly
    • Dress shirt, tie, trousers, dress shoes
    • Shaven, freshly showered, recent NEAT haircut
    • All of the above are a must
    • You may wear a matching blazer/jacket
    • Keep in mind that you might be going for the biggest interview of your life yet, one that would probably secure you a job for the next 40 years, so dress appropriately
  4. Attend the interview
  5. Arrive EARLY (Impt)
    • You need time to change pass (cannot predict if there would be a big event happening at the venue and if the guardhouse would be overwhelmed)
    • Give yourself some time to chill, compose yourself, check your attire and personal bearing before heading in.
    • There is quite a lengthy process where your documents will need to be verified, height and weight get taken, and you will need to fill in more forms.
    • HR picks on punctuality and is known to start once all candidates are present
      • "If you're early, you're on time. If you're on time, you're already late. If you're late, good luck."
  6. Once all documents are verified, you will be ushered into a waiting area
    • Could be an auditorium, meeting room, open area etc.
    • Continue to be aware of your surroundings, study the stimuli
      • If a video is being played, watch it, and remember the key points (who's talking, what did he/she say, why are these videos being played etc)
      • If you are in a room with posters, remember them
      • Remember how many doors, windows, people etc.
      • This might be a test of your situational awareness, a key factor in flying
    • You will be called up and led to sit outside one of several rooms
    • There are usually several interview sessions conducted concurrently for this stage
    • Go in when you are called
    • Shake hands, try to remember the names of all the interviewers
    • Don't fidget, maintain your posture, sit upright
    • If you tend to move your hands around while talking, moderate that movement
    • The usual interviewing skills apply- be confident, be yourself
    • Lastly the biggest tip is
      • Every interviewee will be asked different questions
      • The interviews tend to be personalised to the individual- some might get more technical questions, some HR type questions, some corporate information type of questions
      • Most importantly, you need to sit down and question your motivations behind being a pilot, and why you choose SQ
      • From then on, move on to elaborate all your answers with these motivations
